As an observational astrophysicist, W. Yuan has been working on research of active nuclei of galaxies and quasars --- luminous celestial objects in the Universe powered by supermassive black holes --- and the physical processes that govern them. He is also interested in high-energy transients. He makes use of data acquired by space-based observatories as well as ground-based telescopes ......

W. Yuan's research is mainly concerned with space X-ray astronomy and high-energy astrophysics, and he is involved in the science teams of astronomical space missions being currently developed and proposed in China.
